The BATIE Family History

This report of our family's history is the result of the combined efforts of many, many people who have diligently collected, catalogued and contributed the material presented here. Each family member who has donated the time and effort to prepare a descriptive summary of their family members deserves special thanks. In addition, each person who went the extra mile to dig out additional new information, resolve conflicting information and verify previously unsubstantiated information also deserves additional special recognition. However, regrettably, space does not permit listing each individual who has so generously supported this project.

Nevertheless, there are several who deserve special mention here for their support, collaboration and diligence in checking and rechecking the many individual bits of information to go together to make up this record. I have indeed been fortunate to have as advisors on this project many serious researchers of related lines who have graciously shared their information with me. I hope I have, in turn, been of assistance in their efforts. Foremost among these are J. Russell BATIE of Lincoln, NE (Batie line); W. Garfield BOLAND of Ottawa, ON and his brother Ed BOLAND of Belmont, ON (ROBSON and CALVERT lines); Ruth and Una LOFT of Ilderton, ON (CHARLTON line), John H. ROBSON of London, ON (ROBSON line); Jean McINTOSH of Victoria, BC and Philip LUNO of London, ON (CAVERHILL line); J. Gordon SCOTT of Ottawa, ON (SCOTT line); Nettie OSMOND of Ilderton, ON (STEWART and SCOTT lines); William GRIEVE of Belmont, ON (GRIEVE line); Jean T. Evans of Hale Center, TX (BATY and WHILLANS line); Oliver FENWICK of Ilderton, ON (Telfer Family); Beth PARK and Jean (PARK) COON (PARK line); Esther SCHANDORFF of Nampa, ID (ROBSON and WHILLANS lines); Richard THORNTON of Des Moines, IA (THORNTON line); Lloyd BATY and his son David BATY of London, ON (BATY line); Phyllis URBSHOTT of Ilderton, ON (CHARLTON line); and Joy COON of Bridgeport, NE and Ida SHELBOURN of Valentine, NE (COON, SHELBOURN and WHILLANS lines).

In addition to the above researchers, I have relied on the advice of J. Kenneth BROWN, a professional genealogist in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Northumberland County, England. He has provided additional historical background from the early church records which has influenced the makeup of the families shown on the fold-out chart of the descendants of Thomas BATIE and Margaret ROBSON. I am also indebted to Beryl CHARLTON for allowing me to quote directly from her book, "Upper North Tynedale, a Northumbrian Valley And Its People" and also to Rodney S. LIGHTFOOTE for permission to use material from his book, "A History of The Town of Seneca (New York)."

While assembling this record of our family, I have been privileged to be able to visit with literally scores of families who enthusiastically supported the formation of this document. They generously provided all the information they could to the accumulating record, shared extracts from family Bibles containing priceless inscriptions of otherwise unknown events, and provided many photographs which could be copied and made a permanent part of this record for all to enjoy. And finally, my heartfelt thanks to the hundreds of families who responded to family questionnaires with additional details on their individual families. It is all of you who have really authored this Family History by providing the detailed information which I have but edited and molded into a hopefully entertaining story of our family.
